Lesson Plans

Picture
The lesson plans on this site focus on three aspects of the fair: architecture, technology and innovation, and conditions in Chicago in 1893.  The plans include links to primary- and secondary-source documents, maps, and images; worksheets for analyzing them; and activities. All documents and images are also collected under the "Resources" tab, for easy access.

A method of assessment is included, as are links to other lesson-plan sites (some for younger children) and suggestions for further study.

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to
  • describe the effect of the fair on American architecture;
  • argue for or against "modern" design in building;
  • identify significant innovations from the Fair;
  • understand living conditions in late 19th-century Chicago; and
  • write essays (letters) from multiple points of view about the fair.

Enjoy the trip!
